A peaceful coastal destination surrounded by forests, islands and natural beauty
Mayabunder is a scenic coastal town in North and Middle Andaman and the headquarters of the North and Middle Andaman district. Located away from the busier tourist centres of South Andaman, it offers visitors an opportunity to experience a quieter side of the Andaman Islands, with forests, beaches, creeks, small islands and historical sites spread across the surrounding region.
The area is particularly appealing to travelers who enjoy nature and less-crowded destinations. The coastline around Mayabunder is dotted with beaches and small islands, while the surrounding tropical landscape provides a peaceful setting for sightseeing and photography.
One of the notable historical attractions is the German Jetty. The old jetty is associated with the early history of Mayabunder and reflects the area's connections with the colonial period. Today, it is one of the places visitors can explore while discovering the historical side of the town.
Karmatang Beach is another important attraction in the Mayabunder area. The beach is known as a nesting and settling ground for several species of marine turtles, including leatherback, green, hawksbill and olive ridley turtles. The area is also being developed as a visitor destination and has potential for activities such as scuba diving and snorkelling, subject to applicable conditions and regulations.
Aves Island, also known as Avis Island, is another natural attraction associated with Mayabunder. The surrounding waters and island landscapes provide opportunities to appreciate the quieter coastal environment of North Andaman. The island and its beach are included in the Andaman & Nicobar Tourism Department's current list of beaches and tourism locations.
Visitors can also explore the wider Mayabunder region, where attractions include Entrance Island and other small islands and coastal locations. These places offer a different experience from the more developed tourist destinations around Sri Vijaya Puram and Swaraj Dweep.
The natural surroundings are an important part of Mayabunder's character. Visitors may encounter tropical forests, mangroves, coastal vegetation and a variety of bird and marine life while travelling through the region. The area is particularly suitable for travelers who prefer nature, photography and quiet sightseeing rather than crowded commercial attractions.
How to reach: Mayabunder can be reached from Sri Vijaya Puram by road through the Andaman Trunk Road. Regular government and private bus services operate towards Mayabunder, while boat services are also available according to the schedule of the Directorate of Shipping Services.
Mayabunder is best explored at a relaxed pace. Visitors can combine the town with nearby beaches and natural attractions and spend time discovering the landscape and history of North and Middle Andaman.
Visitors should check local conditions and the current status of individual attractions before travelling, particularly when planning visits to islands, beaches or protected areas. Access to some locations may depend on weather, permissions, forest regulations and boat operations.
Best for: Nature lovers, photographers, families, explorers, beach lovers, history enthusiasts and travelers looking for a quieter Andaman experience.
