Witness India's only active volcano from the surrounding waters

Barren Island is one of the most remarkable natural destinations in the Andaman Sea and is home to India's only confirmed active volcano. Located in the Andaman Islands, the remote island is surrounded by the deep blue waters of the sea and has a striking landscape shaped by volcanic activity.

Unlike the green and densely inhabited islands that are popular with tourists, Barren Island has a rugged and largely barren appearance. Its dark volcanic slopes, rocky coastline and distinctive crater landscape create a dramatic contrast with the surrounding ocean.

The island's volcano has remained active over the years, with recorded eruptions occurring at different times. Volcanic activity has shaped much of the island's present landscape, leaving behind layers of dark volcanic material and steep slopes leading towards the sea.

Barren Island is also interesting from a natural-history perspective. Despite its harsh volcanic environment, vegetation and wildlife have established themselves on parts of the island. The surrounding waters are home to marine life and coral ecosystems, making the area interesting not only for its geology but also for its wider marine environment.

One of the most fascinating ways to experience Barren Island is from the sea. A boat journey around the island provides views of the volcanic landscape, rocky coastline and surrounding waters. The experience is particularly memorable because of the island's remote location and unusual geological character.

Barren Island is a protected and restricted destination, so it is very different from the regular tourist beaches of the Andaman Islands. Current Andaman & Nicobar Tourism guidelines state that visits to Barren Island are restricted to travelling on board authorised vessels, with no landing ashore. Visitors should therefore not plan a beach visit, trekking expedition or landing on the island.

Access is also subject to applicable permissions, safety requirements, weather conditions and official regulations. Visitors should arrange any trip only through authorised operators and confirm the latest rules before travelling, as access arrangements can change.

The journey itself is an important part of the experience. From the boat, visitors can appreciate the island's volcanic terrain while maintaining a safe distance from the shore. Depending on sea conditions and the route followed by the vessel, views of the volcano and coastline can vary.

Because Barren Island is a sensitive natural environment, visitors should follow all instructions from the authorities and boat crew. No attempt should be made to land on the island, approach restricted areas or disturb the natural environment.

How to reach: Barren Island can only be approached by sea. There is no regular public ferry service for tourists to land on the island. Any visit must comply with the prevailing permissions, vessel requirements and restrictions imposed by the Andaman & Nicobar Administration.

Barren Island is best suited to travelers who are fascinated by volcanoes, geology, marine landscapes and unusual natural destinations. Even without setting foot on the island, seeing an active volcanic landscape rising from the Andaman Sea is a memorable experience.

Best for: Nature lovers, adventure travelers, photographers, geology enthusiasts, marine enthusiasts and visitors interested in volcanic landscapes.
